The museum offers the richest collection on the history of Mongolia, from Stone Age to modern times. It helps to understand the unique culture and lifestyle of the horse riding steppe nomads.
The exhibition contains military equipment and arms of Chinggis Khaan era, anthropological and archeological artifacts. The ground floor displays the cultural items related Mongolia, the ger, farming implements, horse saddles, musical instruments, and some exhibits related to Buddhism. The second floor is contains the traditional costumes and head-gears from the various minority groups of Mongolia. The third floor houses mainly historical photos, documents, etc. The large modern sculpture outside the museum is a memorial for the victims of the 1930s political repression.
