Russia showcased its modernised military war machine in a grand parade in Moscow's Red Square on Monday, marking the 71st anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

An advanced air-defence missile system used to protect Russia's military base in Syria was also on display, as were some of the fighter jets that have flown missions in that war-torn country.

The event, an annual fixture, took place under bright sunshine as President Vladimir Putin looked on from stands filled with Soviet war veterans.

In his speech, Putin largely confined his remarks to the importance of defeating the Nazis, but also spoke about the need today to fight global terrorism and cooperate with other nations in that effort.

An estimated 27 million of the former Soviet Union's soldiers and civilians were killed during World War II.
